The Periyar, the longest river in Kerala, South India, originates in the Sahya mountain range and joins the western Arabian Sea. Periyar also known as Aluvappuzha are mentioned in the lyrics of the famous Malayalam lyricist and poet Vayalar Rama Varma and in the verses of many other famous Malayalam poets.
Malavana Rock (Malavanapara in Malayalam) is located near Puthenvelikkara village, Paravur taluk which is famous for agriculture especially Paddy fields in Ernakulam district, just before the confluence of the Periyar and Chalakudy rivers, at Elenthikkara before the Periyar merges with the Arabian Sea.
Malavanapara, which amazes the onlookers, stands tall above the river water that flows almost in the middle of the river. Kottayil Kovilakam is a historical place located on the opposite side of the Malavana shore and rock at Puthenvelikkara. The Jewish Synagogue, built over 500 years ago, is a must visit for tourists. Both sides are locally known as the Malavana Ferry. Kottayil Kovilakam is located in the Chendamangalam Panchayath. Tourists can hire a rowing boat to reach Malavana Rock if they are curious to see Malavana Rock up close. There is nothing to see inside Malavanapara, which is difficult to navigate.
It is said that during the rule of the old feudal lords, Malavanapara was a place where prisoners were left to die. It is often said by the elders that cries can be heard from inside the Malavanapara during the night. Not far from the Muziris Heritage Project, the visible Malavanapara is a must-see during the journey in search of historical monuments. Malavanapara is situated in 8 kilometres away from Kodungallur town in Thrissur district, 18 kilometres away from North Paravur town in Ernakulam district and 8 km away from Mala town in Thrissur district.
